Here again is the sketch my mother sent me for designing the cover of her latest book.
She also chose a color scheme from a book of them. The CMYK color percentages are listed on the left with their RGB equivalents on the right.
And this is the result:
Once again I've beheaded the central figure to resolve what is a common problem for illustrators. How do you show an individual who represents people in general? Showing a person is showing someone specific.
You can see from her sketch that my mother's solution is to leave the face blank. Fashion illustrators do that, but it gives me the creeps. So I behead. It was more subtle on the previous cover, even though that was a double-beheading.
The 'rooftop' corners on the white bars were a happy accident that came about while I was moving things around. They suggest collars and ties, so rather than removing them, I worked them into the design.
And this is the back.
