Seuss sightings

While I was in Southern California last week, I happened upon The Art of Dr. Seuss collection at the Narrative Gallery at Laguna Beach. It's an exhibition that's been touring the world since 1997.

Original works by Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss) are very rarely, if ever, put up for sale. This is a collection of reproductions of his original artwork. Geisel asked his wife Audrey not to release his original works to the public until after he was gone, including what he referred to as his "midnight paintings". He's known primarily for his children's books, but this show makes it clear that he was depicting the real world with a wry wit.

By incredible coincidence, friend Susan Stromquist wrote to me yesterday to describe The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum that she just visited in Springfield, Massachusetts. "There's a lot of kids stuff on the first floor but second floor was cool, lots of old letters and sketches and ephemera from his life, reflecting his true sense of humor, and recreation of his studio and living room."

It was also announced two days ago that Seuss's childhood home will be turned into "an innovation center for educators, students, writers and artists".
